The Ides of March is upon us. For those faithful blog readers, if you recall, the 6 month mark of no dating would be lifted today. I did spend at least 4 of those 6 months single, that's more than a 50% success rate. So...go me?? Anyway i got my laptop fixed. When i called the guy last week to get a price on my fan, he told me $44. So i said okay and took my computer to him. I go pick it up today, and my bill is $175, $85 for labor, and $85 for the fan. Well...i asked him about it, and told him that he only told me 44. He said that was impossible b/c they bought the fan for $53.
Now...there are two things wrong with this statement...
1. He actually said $44, because i wrote it down while i was at work and have stared at that post-it everyday for a week.
2. He still upped the price by $32 on that fan even if he did pay $53 for it.
Now i understand that people gotta make money around here...however...that's way too much to charge for a freakin' fan! I mean honestly...he couldn't charge me an extra $10, and then he still gets his 85 for the labor! And i guarantee it took him all of 30 minutes to put in my new fan.
Geez...he did cut my labor charge in half to make up for the cost of the fan, but you could tell he was very unhappy about it. I hated being a bitch...but i'm not going to pay anymore than i have to.
Hopefully i won't have anymore computer problems anytime soon...but if i do...i will definitely go somewhere else.

Computer repair is a big fucking scam. Thankfully i build my own systems and can fix my problems.
Laptops are more difficualt and you can only do so much to fix them. But that is a bit high in price.

what happened to your warranty?

First, get estimates in writing, then if the price is going to be more, have the repair guy call you before he touches the laptop.
You could have gotten a new part on an auction site cheaper and done the repair yourself. I have confidence in you! You can read the instructions just as well as the repair guy.

Ouch. Next time you've got a problem, give me a call. It may require some coordinating to get times/distances worked out, and I can't guarantee I fix everything, but I also don't charge $85 for labor or mark up my parts.
the actual margins on honest computer repair aren't enough for anyone to make money at it. the best way to go is with the best buy tech support guys... they can operate at a tiny margin because they're part of ginormo best buy.
